Where is the curator? DVD, 7 mins, 1999

The video 'Where is the Curator', was filmed at the London Metal Exchange and at the ICA theatre. The London Metal Exchange interested us as location because of its specific interior design. Here the traders are still dealing 'manually', i.e. through human interaction and not digitally, as in most other international exchanges,   where trade is now executed electronically and where the commodity is dematerialised to its essence - exchange value. Money is the medium. Money itself comes in many forms. It can be anything: coin, paper, barcode. Global market networks existed long before the Internet. Technology and electronic media have enabled rapid growth in the number and speed of transactions, which, together with virtually world-wide acceptance of the ideology of free-market liberal capitalism, means that economic growth and international trade are dependent on the development of technology and the supply of information.
